LHC recommends formation of committee to probe petrol crisis

Image
The Lahore High Court recommended the government form a committee to probe the recent petrol crisis, calling on the National Assembly speaker to include members of the opposition and treasury benches in it. LHC Chief Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan asked Attorney General Khalid Javed Khan to discuss the court’s suggestion with the speaker. He observed that the court wants the parliament to do this job on its own, otherwise, the law will take its course and no official, if found guilty, would be spared. The chief justice was hearing a petition seeking action against concerned authorities for their alleged failure to control shortage of petrol. The chief justice directed the attorney general to assist the court during the next hearing to determine if the speaker does not form a committee, whether a commission under the code of criminal procedure would be appropriate to hold investigation into the fuel crisis. At the outset of the hearing, the counsel of the petitioner sought the court’...

China imposed new national security law in Hong Kong

Image
China imposed a sweeping national security law in Hong Kong, dramatically tightening its grip on the semi-autonomous city in a historic move decried by Western nations as a threat to the financial hub’s freedoms. Described by Beijing as a “sword” hanging over the heads of those endangering national security, the law took effect hours after it was signed by President Xi Jinping and just six weeks since it was first unveiled. Fed up with pro-democracy protests that rocked the city last year, China’s top lawmaking body enacted the legislation following closed-door deliberations that kept details secret until its passage. The law gives Beijing jurisdiction over “very serious” national security crimes, with offenders facing up to life in prison, according to the text published late Tuesday. The controversial law also empowers China to set up a national security agency in the city, staffed by officials who are not bound by local law when carrying out duties. The new suite of powers ra...

Court issues bailable arrest warrant for Asif Zardari

Image
An accountability court on Tuesday issued a bailable arrest warrant for former president Asif Ali Zardari in the Toshakhana reference, in which he is one of the main suspects along with former prime ministers Yousaf Raza Gilani and Nawaz Sharif. During today’s proceedings, Zardari’s counsel Farooq H Naek told the court that he had already filed a plea in court to exempt his client from appearing before the court. “I am a senior lawyer and I am telling the court that Asif Zardari will be present at the next hearing,” Naek said. Naek told Justice Asghar Ali that summoning Zardari to court will cause a lot of people to gather and cause a rush, which will be dangerous due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The court, however, rejected the former president’s plea and issued a bailable arrest warrant for him. "I'll give a long date, Asif Zardari should appear before the court," said Justice Asghar. Foreign investment in govt securities climbs to $66mn in June

Image
Nearly $66 million were invested via foreign funds in government securities during June without any outflows recorded during the month, data from the State Bank of Pakistan showed. Foreign funds amounting to $37.5 million were invested in treasury bills and $28.1 million in Pakistan investment bonds, according to the data from the central bank. The robust inflows are an indication of foreign investors’ interest in high-yielding debt market despite back-to-back rate cuts by the central bank over the past three months. Tahir Abbas, the head of Research at Arif Habib Limited said foreigner investors sense that there is a less likelihood of further rupee depreciation. “Indeed, they are betting on potential [rupee] appreciation… together with good returns that means a win-win situation.” The SBP brought interest rate cumulatively down by 625 basis points to 7% since March 17 to boost the economy amid the coronavirus crisis. However, the rate is still one of the highest across the reg...

U.N. to call for more aid for Syrians at virtual donor meeting

Image
Governments are set to pledge billions of dollars in aid for Syrians at a virtual conference on Tuesday to help refugees enduring Syria’s ninth year of armed conflict, as COVID-19 and high food prices worsen the plight of millions. This year, the United Nations is looking for almost $10 billion for people in Syria and surrounding countries. It hopes much of that will come from the 60 governments and non-governmental agencies gathering by video link on Tuesday from 0800 GMT. The European Union is hosting the event. The pledging, now an annual event, breaks down into a U.N. appeal of $3.8 billion for aid inside Syria and $6.04 billion for countries hosting refugees. Only a fraction has been raised so far. “The needs have never been greater,” said Corinne Fleischer at the World Food Programme, a U.N. agency. In Syria, more than 11 million people need aid and protection, the U.N. says, while 6.6 million have fled to neighbouring countries in the world’s largest refugee crisis. Many ...

West Indies to wear ‘Black Lives Matter’ logo for England series

Image
West Indies will wear “Black Lives Matter” emblem on the collars of their shirts during England series, Cricket West Indies (CWI). Premier League soccer clubs have been wearing the logo since the season’s restart as a tribute to protests against racial injustice following the death of a Black man, George Floyd, who died in police custody on May 25 in Minneapolis. The same logo will be used on the shirts, which is designed by Alisha Hosannah, whose partner Troy Deeney is the Watford football club’s captain. Deeney was contacted by CWI for approval and the ICC gave permission for the emblem to be worn on the teams’ collars. “We believe we have a duty to show solidarity and also to help raise awareness. This is a pivotal moment in history for sports, for the game of cricket and for the West Indies cricket team” West Indies skipper Jason Holder said in the statement. “We have come to England to retain the Wisden Trophy but we are very conscious of happenings around the world and the ...

Hammad Azhar dismisses opposition outcry over 2020-21 budget as political point-scoring

Image
The government on Sunday dismissed the outcry by the opposition over the budget proposed for the fiscal year 2020-21, saying it was merely an attempt at political point-scoring. "No new tax was imposed in the budget, instead, relief was given," said Minister for Industries and Production Hammad Azhar, who had presented the budget in the National Assembly on June 12. "It is incomprehensible why the opposition is rejecting the budget," he said, adding: "Political point-scoring has become a tradition in the country." He said that the oil prices had never seen such a drastic reduction as they had in the incumbent government's tenure. Azhar said that he had not even presented the budget and the opposition “had already rejected it”. “I was expecting that since we are facing a grave health emergency, the situation will be different, but to our disappointment the opposition has succumbed to their old habit of looking to their own interests and not the c...

'Govt on its last legs': Opposition parties reject 2020-21 budget

Image
Opposition parties held a press conference in Islamabad on Sunday to announce they "completely reject" the federal government's budget for the upcoming fiscal year, and to demand that Prime Minister Imran Khan step down. "The opposition leaders have unanimously declined and rejected the budget and will take all measures possible to protest against it," said PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. "We were expecting that the government would provide some sort of relief at a time of crisis, but to the contrary, the government has increased the burden on the public," said the PPP chairman. The government has imposed a tax on petrol, before the passing of the budget, which is even more than the rate of petrol itself, Bilawal said. "There has been an absolute failure on the government's part to secure our lives and protect our health," he added. The PPP chairman said that the entire opposition, meanwhile, had "played a responsible rol...

Youtube targets TikTok with 15 second video test

Image
Google-owned YouTube appears to have taken an aim at TikTok as the streaming giant has now started testing a way to record multi-segment videos that run up to a maximum length of 15 seconds. The 15-second video format, made popular by TikTok, is now being increasingly tried by other social media platforms as well. YouTube announced its intention to give the 15-second video format a try this week, which may be called ‘Shorts’. The experiments have started on mobile — both Android and iOS — with a small group of people. YouTube hasn’t revealed further upcoming details about whether they would bring more controls or features related to the short-form videos in the form of filters, effects, music, AR, or buttons to change the video speed – that basically makes what TikTok is today. YouTube has confirmed that the 15-second videos experiment is not a part of the Stories section and with that being said, there is still confusion on how will the short videos be discoverable within the Y...

Pakistan rejects illegal grant of IOK domicile certificates to Indians

Image
Pakistan has categorically rejected the grant of domicile certificates of Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOK) by the Indian authorities to reportedly 25,000 Indian nationals. In a statement, Foreign Office Spokesperson Aisha Farooqui said that the certificates issued to non-Kashmiris including, among others, the Indian government officials under “Jammu and Kashmir Grant of Domicile Certificate (Procedure), 2020” are illegal, void and in complete violation of the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, and International law including the 4th Geneva Convention. She said that the latest action is a vindication of Pakistan’s consistent stance that the major intention behind the Indian government’s illegal and unilateral actions of 5 August 2019 was to change the demographic structure of IOK and turn Kashmiris into a minority in their own land. The spokesperson said that this has long been part of the RSS-BJP’s “Hindutva” agenda. By changing the demographic structure ...

Facebook announces to ban ‘hateful content’ in ads

Image
Facebook said Friday it would ban a “wider category of hateful content” in ads as the embattled social media giant moved to respond to growing protests over its handling of inflammatory posts. Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook also would add tags to posts that are “newsworthy” but violate platform rules — following the lead of Twitter, which has used such labels on tweets from President Donald Trump. The new policy on hateful content in ads will “prohibit claims that people from a specific race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, caste, sexual orientation, gender identity or immigration status are a threat to the physical safety, health or survival of others,” Zuckerberg said. “We’re also expanding our policies to better protect immigrants, migrants, refugees and asylum seekers” from hateful ads, he continued. Facebook has underscored its moves to stem racism in the wake of civil unrest triggered by the May 25 killing of African American George Floyd a...

COVID-19 and conspiracy theories: ‘The electronic chip and the poison’

Image
The vaccine will inject you with an electronic chip, poison you, make you sick, they say. There’s no vaccine yet for treating COVID-19, and scientists are multiplying efforts to find one. But already anti-vaxxers — a small but vocal group of people who don’t believe in vaccinations — have taken advantage of the pandemic to multiply disinformation on social media. The video “Plandemic,” which claims the COVID-19 crisis was a government setup, has already been viewed millions of times on YouTube and other streaming platforms. A list of substances with scary-sounding names — phenoxyethanol, potassium chloride — said to be found in toxic quantities in vaccines (which is not true) has been shared thousands of times on Facebook since the end of April. The anti-vax rhetoric is not new, but has gained huge visibility during the pandemic, according to experts who spoke with AFP. Echo chamber The anti-vax movement predates both the internet and the COVID-19 crisis, but social media has ...
