New on Sports Illustrated: Nebraska Keeps Defying the Big Ten, Responding to Adversity With Petulance

Image
The school has been much more of an antagonist than a Big Ten loyalist in 2020. Nebraska is in its 10th season as a member of the Big Ten Conference. It has played 78 league games since relocating from the Big 12 (losing 38 of them). And yet the school continues to act like it has no idea how to be a cohesive member. Are the Cornhuskers slow learners, tone deaf, willfully belligerent or still clinging to an outdated sense of blueblood entitlement? Maybe all of the above. Because here we are again, with another case of Why Nebraska and the Big Ten Can't Get Along. They certainly didn’t read the Big Ten room very astutely this week, finding yet another way to tick off everyone but their Ohio State bromancers. After losing their upcoming game against Wisconsin due to the Badgers’ COVID-19 issues , the Huskers once again responded to adversity with petulance. Then with an attempt to flout the league rules. Then with another statement when everyone said, once more, “What’s up wi

New on Sports Illustrated: Dabo Swinney Would Be 'Surprised' if Trevor Lawrence Returned to Clemson

Clemson's Dabo Swinney said Thursday he'd be "surprised" if Trevor Lawrence returned for his senior season, but left some wiggle room in his response. Clemson's Dabo Swinney weighed in on his quarterback's future on Thursday, saying he'd be "surprised" if Trevor Lawrence returned for his senior season. But like Lawrence did earlier this week , Swinney left some wiggle room in his response.  Lawrence said to reporters earlier this week that he is open to returning to Clemson for his senior season despite being the projected No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.  "My mindset has been that I'm going to move on," Lawrence said. "But who knows? There's a lot of things that could happen." During an appearance on SiriusXM's ESPNU Radio with Mark Packer, Swinney was asked whether there was anything to read into those comments from Lawrence. "I didn't read anything into it. Don't really care,"

Make Science Great Again: US researchers dream of life after Trump

Image
From his lab in Toulouse, France, Benjamin Sanderson models the range of extreme risks to humans from climate change — research he hopes can inform policymakers planning for worsening wildfires and floods. It is the kind of work he once performed in the United States — and hopes to again soon. Sanderson is among dozens of US-based climate scientists who shifted their research to France, or sought refuge in academia or in left-leaning states like California after Republican Donald Trump was elected in 2016. They worried his administration’s distrust of science would impact their ability to finance and advance their work. Now, with the presidential election looming — and Democrat Joe Biden ahead in the polls and promising to prioritise the role of science in policymaking — some of these researchers hope for a return to the days when the US was viewed as the best place on earth to do their jobs. Climate science in Europe is not treated as a “political topic”, Sanderson said, adding t

New on Sports Illustrated: A Breakthrough for the Ages: How Michael Penix Jr. and Indiana Got Their Moment

Image
Penix Jr. surprised even his own family when he committed to the Hoosiers. Now, he's led them to a program-defining win. The replay review took a while, minutes piling on top of each other, emotions held hostage, a legion of souls suffering in pigskin purgatory. Did desperately lunging Michael Penix Jr. break the goal line with the football before his hand landed out of bounds? The answer would decide the winner of Penn State vs. Indiana. Such a close call, so much riding on it for Indiana—this was either a breakthrough victory, or one more log of kindling on the towering pyre of Hoosier football dejection. Finally, referee Ron Snodgrass turned and faced America and rendered the verdict: The call on the field stands. Indiana defeats No. 8 Penn State, 36–35 , its first victory over a top-10 opponent since 1988. At that moment, 60 miles north in the Indianapolis suburb of Broad Ripple, Connor Hitchcock lost it. “Finally! Finally! Finally!” He screamed, his long sandy hairy fl
