PTI brought economy on brink of bankruptcy: Miftah

Finance Minister Miftah Ismail on Thursday declared that Pakistan has been "saved from bankruptcy" as he announced a draft of new measures which will be included in the budget for fiscal year 2022-23.

“We have saved the country from bankruptcy by increasing the prices of petroleum products and by holding late-night dialogue with the Fund mission,” he said, addressing a press conference flanked by Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb.

The finance minister said that the PTI-led government left the economy on the brink of a default and that too "only to remain in power", saying that he has never seen such a “touch-and-go” situation ever in his decades-long career.

Ismail said that the deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over budgetary measures for the next fiscal year 2022-23 has been closed.

He revealed that he would close the federal budget for the next fiscal year 2022-23 tomorrow with his closing speech in the National Assembly.

Terming the budget proposals “historic”, Miftah said that indirect taxes haven’t been imposed on the consumption of goods on which countries earn more tax. He blamed the previous Imran Khan-led government for burdening the masses by imposing several taxes on consumption.

“Imran Khan and co. led Pakistan towards the four biggest historic budget deficits,” he said, adding that the difference between the expenditures and taxes was the highest in the history of the country during the PTI tenure.

The finance minister said that the coalition government this time has imposed taxes on the rich, adding that another 1% supertax would be imposed on people earning more than Rs150 million, 2% on income of more than Rs200 million, 3% on people earning more than Rs250 million and 4% on income of more than Rs300 million for a year.

The finance minister further said that in this budget the government is focusing on shared sacrifice which will help Pakistan improve its financial situation.

The spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban on Monday declared that the war in the country is over, saying that the group desires peaceful relations with the world. North Korea imported Chinese masks before declaring Covid victory

North Korea imported more than 1 million facial masks and 15,000 pairs of rubber gloves from China in July, shortly before declaring victory over Covid-19, Chinese trade showed on Saturday. Pyongyang last week declared victory over the coronavirus, ending a little-detailed fight against “fever” cases that had risen to 4.77 million. It has registered no new such cases since July 29. Still, China exported 1.23 million facial masks to North Korea in July, worth $44,307, surging from 17,000 the previous month, according to data released by Chinese customs. From January to July, the last month for which data is available, the North bought more than 11.93 million masks from China, data showed. Sindh govt seeks army's help in implementation of coronavirus SOPs

The government of Sindh has sought help from the Pakistan Army in implementing coronavirus SOPs as cases of the virus surge across the country. The provincial government has written to the Ministry of Interior, seeking the army's help for the civil administration under Article 245 of the Constitution. Sindh government said it would inform the interior ministry about details regarding troop employment and equipment after holding consultations over the matter. Monsoon rains add to Karachi’s woes, kill two youngsters

A powerful monsoon system formed in the Arabian Sea caused torrential downpours in various parts of Karachi Sunday evening, but it claimed the lives of two youngsters. According to the police, a woman and her three-month-old daughter fell into a flooded nullah in the Buffer Zone area while they were passing through on a motorbike. US President Joe Biden urged calm between Israel and Gaza on Saturday and affirmed his support for a two-state solution in his first phone call with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas since taking office, the official Palestinian news agency said.
