Pakistan reports 825 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours

Pakistan reported 14 more coronavirus-related fatalities during the past 24 hours, taking the death toll from the disease to 6,759.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), 825 fresh infections emerged during this period, lifting the national tally of cases to 330,200. Around 29,477 samples were tested on Tuesday.

There are a total of 11,627 active cases of the coronavirus as 311,814 patients have so far recuperated from the disease.

Thus far, Sindh has reported 144,449 cases, followed by Punjab that has reported 103,314 cases while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported 39,189, Balochistan 15,859, Islamabad 19,300, Gilgit Baltistan 4,200 and Azad Jammu and Kashmir 3,839

611 of the patients under treatment in hospitals across the country are said to be in critical condition.

On Tuesday evening, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr. Faisal Sultan had said Pakistan is currently experiencing the start of the COVID-19 pandemic’s second wave.

Addressing a press conference, the PM’ aide hinted at imposing new social distancing restrictions following the start of the second coronavirus wave. “Covid-19 pandemic’s second wave has started in Pakistan and new restrictions could be introduced to control the spread of the virus,” the special assistant said.

Petrol may go up by Rs25, HSD by Rs40

The federal government is mulling over a plan to cut subsidies on petroleum products in phases -- Rs25 per litre on petrol and Rs40 per litre on high speed diesel (HSD) in the first one -- in a bid to reduce the volume of the mounting price differential claims. The prices of petrol and high speed diesel (HSD) will jump up to Rs195 per litre and Rs230 per litre respectively, if the federal government withdraws all the subsidies on them at once. The subsidies on petroleum products continue to swell because of higher global oil prices and depreciation of the local currency against the US dollar that may lead to a higher budget deficit. In addition, the government is also facing problems of balance of payment and wants to avail the International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout package. Sources said that government is currently giving a subsidy of Rs29.60 per litre on petrol. FIA files case against Jahangir Tareen in sugar scam, money laundering

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has filed two FIRs against Jahangir Tareen and two other family members in sugar scandal and money laundering charges, on Wednesday. FIA Lahore registered cases against CEO of JWD Sugar Mills, Jahangir Tareen, his son Ali Tareen and son-in-law in the sugar scam. “Over three billion rupees money laundering made by showing investment in a closed factory,” according to the FIR. The investigation agency has also charged Tareen and others for illegal hoarding of sugar, misappropriation and cheating in the FIR. CEO of JWD Sugar Mills in an act of forgery transferred 3.14 billion rupees to a closed company, the FIR read. “In year 2011-12 over three billion rupees were transferred to Farooqi Pulp Milk Ltd,” according to the case.
