SBP announces monetary policy, keeps rate unchanged at 7%

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) announced its bi-monthly monetary policy on Monday and decided to maintain its policy rate at 7%, according to a statement issued by the bank.

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) noted that since its last meeting in September 2020, domestic recovery has gradually gained traction in line with expectations for growth of slightly above 2% in the fiscal year 2021. The statement added that business sentiment has also improved in the country.

Per the statement, the recent surge in COVID-19 cases across Pakistan, as well as many other countries, present considerable downside risks. However, the news of an upcoming coronavirus vaccine is encouraging.

In terms of inflation, the recent out-turns have been on the higher side primarily due to increases in food prices.

"These supply-side pressures are likely to be temporary and average inflation is expected to fall within the previously announced range of 7-9 per cent for FY21. Taken together, risks to the outlook for both growth and inflation appear balanced," the statement read.

The MPC clarified in its statement that in reaching the decision, key trends and prospects in the real, external, and fiscal sectors, as well as the resulting outlook for monetary conditions and inflation, were taken into consideration.

North Korea imported more than 1 million facial masks and 15,000 pairs of rubber gloves from China in July, shortly before declaring victory over Covid-19, Chinese trade showed on Saturday. Monsoon rains add to Karachi’s woes, kill two youngsters

A powerful monsoon system formed in the Arabian Sea caused torrential downpours in various parts of Karachi Sunday evening, but it claimed the lives of two youngsters. Sanctions could cause space station to crash: Roscosmos

Western sanctions against Russia could cause the International Space Station to crash, the head of Russian space agency Roscosmos warned on Saturday, calling for the punitive measures to be lifted. According to Dmitry Rogozin, the sanctions, some of which predate Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, could disrupt the operation of Russian spacecraft servicing the ISS. The government of Sindh has sought help from the Pakistan Army in implementing coronavirus SOPs as cases of the virus surge across the country. The provincial government has written to the Ministry of Interior, seeking the army's help for the civil administration under Article 245 of the Constitution. Sindh government said it would inform the interior ministry about details regarding troop employment and equipment after holding consultations over the matter. Pakistan Army continued its relief and rescue operation in Karachi: ISPR

Pakistan Army on Monday continued its relief and rescue operation in Karachi, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR). According to a statement issued by the military’s media wing, the Army personnel removed rainwater from underpasses located at Golimar, Golimar and KPT, adding that these underpasses have been reopened for traffic. However, the dewatering process was continued in various areas inundated with rainwater, read the statement.
