Study: China re-emerges as bitcoin mining hub

Bitcoin miners, who create the world’s most popular cryptocurrency, are active again in China despite Beijing’s ban on the energy-intensive activity, an academic study found Tuesday.

The United States however remains the biggest country for bitcoin mining followed by number two China, according to researchers from Cambridge University.

"In China, following a sudden uptick in covert mining operations ... the country has re-emerged as a major mining hub," the research paper said.

Chinese activity had slumped in mid-2021 after Beijing launched a crackdown on bitcoin mining projects.

"However, the trend quickly reversed as Chinese miners began to relocate operations," the paper added.

China now accounts for more than 21 percent of mining output, according to the Cambridge researchers who examined data from September 2021 to January 2022.

The US meanwhile represented almost 40 percent of activity.

Bitcoins are "mined" by solving puzzles using powerful computers that consume enormous amounts of electricity.

The miners do so in the hope they will receive new bitcoins for validating transaction data.

However, the system requires massive computer processing power in order to manage and implement transactions, sparking deep concern over its environmental impact.

North Korea imported more than 1 million facial masks and 15,000 pairs of rubber gloves from China in July, shortly before declaring victory over Covid-19, Chinese trade showed on Saturday. Pyongyang last week declared victory over the coronavirus, ending a little-detailed fight against “fever” cases that had risen to 4.77 million. It has registered no new such cases since July 29. Still, China exported 1.23 million facial masks to North Korea in July, worth $44,307, surging from 17,000 the previous month, according to data released by Chinese customs. Western sanctions against Russia could cause the International Space Station to crash, the head of Russian space agency Roscosmos warned on Saturday, calling for the punitive measures to be lifted. The government of Sindh has sought help from the Pakistan Army in implementing coronavirus SOPs as cases of the virus surge across the country. The provincial government has written to the Ministry of Interior, seeking the army's help for the civil administration under Article 245 of the Constitution. Sindh government said it would inform the interior ministry about details regarding troop employment and equipment after holding consultations over the matter. Pakistan Army on Monday continued its relief and rescue operation in Karachi, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR). According to a statement issued by the military’s media wing, the Army personnel removed rainwater from underpasses located at Golimar, Golimar and KPT, adding that these underpasses have been reopened for traffic. Monsoon rains add to Karachi’s woes, kill two youngsters

A powerful monsoon system formed in the Arabian Sea caused torrential downpours in various parts of Karachi Sunday evening, but it claimed the lives of two youngsters. According to the police, a woman and her three-month-old daughter fell into a flooded nullah in the Buffer Zone area while they were passing through on a motorbike. The woman was rescued in an unconscious state, while a search for her daughter was initiated.
