Interest rates to remain unchanged at 7%: SBP's Reza Baqir

State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Dr Reza Baqir announced Thursday that the interest rates would remain unchanged at 7%.

Speaking in a press conference after the monetary policy committee's (MPC) meeting, Dr Reza Baqir said the decision was taken keeping in mind the current situation.

The current interest rate may remain at the same level in the near future and until further improvement in the economy, he added.

"The MPC's inflation estimates are 7-9%," he said, warning, however, that a temporary rise in the prices of food and beverages, as well as electricity, were likely.

The SBP's top official said the reason behind inflation was not high demand. "Things are getting better than before," he explained. "The economy is improving and Pakistan's monetary policy supports it.

"The improvement is still not the kind that we would like to see for our nation," he said.

Dr Reza Baqir noted that the production capacity was not being fully utilised and that the inflation was expected to rise as electricity prices increase.

"The MPC has also given a direction to the future and the SBP has provided guidance for the future as well this time.

"Our situation is better today [and] not what it was at the time of the IMF [International Monetary Fund] programme."

Pyongyang last week declared victory over the coronavirus, ending a little-detailed fight against “fever” cases that had risen to 4.77 million. It has registered no new such cases since July 29. A powerful monsoon system formed in the Arabian Sea caused torrential downpours in various parts of Karachi Sunday evening, but it claimed the lives of two youngsters. Sanctions could cause space station to crash: Roscosmos

Western sanctions against Russia could cause the International Space Station to crash, the head of Russian space agency Roscosmos warned on Saturday, calling for the punitive measures to be lifted. According to Dmitry Rogozin, the sanctions, some of which predate Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, could disrupt the operation of Russian spacecraft servicing the ISS. The government of Sindh has sought help from the Pakistan Army in implementing coronavirus SOPs as cases of the virus surge across the country. The provincial government has written to the Ministry of Interior, seeking the army's help for the civil administration under Article 245 of the Constitution. Sindh government said it would inform the interior ministry about details regarding troop employment and equipment after holding consultations over the matter. Pakistan Army continued its relief and rescue operation in Karachi: ISPR

Pakistan Army on Monday continued its relief and rescue operation in Karachi, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR). According to a statement issued by the military’s media wing, the Army personnel removed rainwater from underpasses located at Golimar, Golimar and KPT, adding that these underpasses have been reopened for traffic. However, the dewatering process was continued in various areas inundated with rainwater, read the statement.
