Zaheer Abbas inducted into PCB Hall of Fame

Pakistan batting great Zaheer Abbas was formally inducted into the Pakistan Cricket Boards Hall of Fame on Saturday.

The 74-year-old former batter received his commemorative cap and plaque from PCB chief executive Faisal Has­nain during the lunch break of the second Test between Pakistan and Australia at Karachi’s National Stadium.

Zaheer is the third PCB Hall of Famer after Fazal Mahmood and Wasim Akr­am to be formally inducted, with the remaining five inductions to take place in due course.

Speaking on the occasion, Zaheer said, “I feel humbled to have been recognised in such a respectful and honourable manner by my parent organisation at my home ground, during play of my favo­u­rite format of the game and in front of passionate cricket fans, who have also played an integral part throu­ghout my cricketing career.”

Known as a run-machine, Zaheer has remained the only Asian batter to score a century of first-class hundreds.

In international cricket, Zaheer scored 5,062 runs in 78 Tests at 44.79 with 12 centuries. He struck seven centuries in 62 ODIs while scoring 2,572 runs at 47.62.

Zaheer scored 1,000 or more Tests runs against Aus­t­ralia (1,411 runs in 20 Tests), England (1,086, 14 Tests) and India (1,740, 19 Tests).

Taliban declare war in Afghanistan over, call for peaceful relations with world

The spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban on Monday declared that the war in the country is over, saying that the group desires peaceful relations with the world. The statement comes a day after the Afghan Taliban entered Kabul as President Ashraf Ghani left the country, saying he wanted avoid bloodshed and conflict. Sindh govt seeks army's help in implementation of coronavirus SOPs

The government of Sindh has sought help from the Pakistan Army in implementing coronavirus SOPs as cases of the virus surge across the country. The provincial government has written to the Ministry of Interior, seeking the army's help for the civil administration under Article 245 of the Constitution. Sindh government said it would inform the interior ministry about details regarding troop employment and equipment after holding consultations over the matter. On the other hand, Sindh information ministry Nasir Hussain Shah has warned that the provincial government will impose a lockdown if the situation turns alarming in Sindh. North Korea imported more than 1 million facial masks and 15,000 pairs of rubber gloves from China in July, shortly before declaring victory over Covid-19, Chinese trade showed on Saturday. Pyongyang last week declared victory over the coronavirus, ending a little-detailed fight against “fever” cases that had risen to 4.77 million. It has registered no new such cases since July 29. Still, China exported 1.23 million facial masks to North Korea in July, worth $44,307, surging from 17,000 the previous month, according to data released by Chinese customs. From January to July, the last month for which data is available, the North bought more than 11.93 million masks from China, data showed. US President Joe Biden urged calm between Israel and Gaza on Saturday and affirmed his support for a two-state solution in his first phone call with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas since taking office, the official Palestinian news agency said.
