IMF programme to provide reprieve to country: Murtaza Syed

Acting Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Dr Murtaza Syed has expressed the hope that the crucial IMF bailout package will provide a reprieve to the country.

Speaking on the forthcoming IMF bailout package and Pakistan’s prospects amidst the difficult global environment, the SBP governor brushed aside the perception that Pakistan’s economy was in dire straits and said that while the world will undergo drastic challenges in the next 12 months, Pakistan is no exception.

The administrative infrastructure in countries like Pakistan is not very strong and as a result effects of price hike become more pronounced here, Murtaza Syed told the audience while unveiling a Rs75 commemorative banknote to mark the 75th anniversary of Pakistan’s Independence in a ceremony held at the SBP Museum.

He also inaugurated the Roshan Pension Plan to augment the lifestyle banking services available under the State Bank’s Roshan Digital Account (RDA) initiative for overseas Pakistanis. He commenced the formal proceedings by hoisting the national flag in the presence of officers of the bank and their families, followed by playing of the national anthem.

The SBP acting governor also inaugurated the Roshan Pension Plan scheme. He said that overseas Pakistanis can now avail the benefits of financial planning for their retirement through the RPP. The soft launch of the product will start from August 15, 2022 with collaboration of RDA banks and Asset Management Companies.

Taliban declare war in Afghanistan over, call for peaceful relations with world

The spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban on Monday declared that the war in the country is over, saying that the group desires peaceful relations with the world. The statement comes a day after the Afghan Taliban entered Kabul as President Ashraf Ghani left the country, saying he wanted avoid bloodshed and conflict. North Korea imported Chinese masks before declaring Covid victory

North Korea imported more than 1 million facial masks and 15,000 pairs of rubber gloves from China in July, shortly before declaring victory over Covid-19, Chinese trade showed on Saturday. Pyongyang last week declared victory over the coronavirus, ending a little-detailed fight against “fever” cases that had risen to 4.77 million. It has registered no new such cases since July 29. Still, China exported 1.23 million facial masks to North Korea in July, worth $44,307, surging from 17,000 the previous month, according to data released by Chinese customs. From January to July, the last month for which data is available, the North bought more than 11.93 million masks from China, data showed. North Korea did not import any Covid-19 prevention and control products from China in May, the data showed. Sindh govt seeks army's help in implementation of coronavirus SOPs

The government of Sindh has sought help from the Pakistan Army in implementing coronavirus SOPs as cases of the virus surge across the country. The provincial government has written to the Ministry of Interior, seeking the army's help for the civil administration under Article 245 of the Constitution. Sindh government said it would inform the interior ministry about details regarding troop employment and equipment after holding consultations over the matter. Biden urges calm in first call with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas

US President Joe Biden urged calm between Israel and Gaza on Saturday and affirmed his support for a two-state solution in his first phone call with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas since taking office, the official Palestinian news agency said.
