Pakistan averted Sri Lanka-like situation, says Miftah

Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Miftah Ismail claimed that Pakistan has successfully averted Sri Lanka-like situation and the economy of the country “was now heading in the right direction”.

Miftah, in an interview with CNBC, said: “There were serious worries about Pakistan heading Sri Lanka’s way and Pakistan getting into a default-like situation but thankfully, we made some significant changes…… I think we averted that situation.”

The finance minister further added that country was now in International Monetary Fund's (IMF) programme and a staff-level agreement has already been signed and approval from the IMF board for the release of funds under the Extended Fund Facility is expected to be given by end of August.

“The country was headed in the right direction,” he said, adding that due to the reduction in demand, the interest rates have been increased. “The imports have also gone down whereas the Pakistani rupee has appreciated by around 7% against the dollar since last week,” he mentioned.

Replying to a question, he said that the tough decision and measures taken by the government had affected the people of the country, however, the government had no other option but to save the economy from collapsing.

The finance minister said the international fuel prices increased while the commodity and edible oil prices also surged, creating a challenging environment at the international level.

He went on to say the Pakistani economy was not in a position to absorb the international price-hike shocks and which is why the government had to pass on the price increase to the people to avert Sri Lanka-like situation in the country.

“Pakistan was passing through difficult times,” he said, expressing the hope that the prices in the international market would come down within a couple of months and would help reduce domestic inflation.

Western sanctions against Russia could cause the International Space Station to crash, the head of Russian space agency Roscosmos warned on Saturday, calling for the punitive measures to be lifted. The government of Sindh has sought help from the Pakistan Army in implementing coronavirus SOPs as cases of the virus surge across the country. The provincial government has written to the Ministry of Interior, seeking the army's help for the civil administration under Article 245 of the Constitution. Sindh government said it would inform the interior ministry about details regarding troop employment and equipment after holding consultations over the matter. Pakistan Army continued its relief and rescue operation in Karachi: ISPR

Pakistan Army on Monday continued its relief and rescue operation in Karachi, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR). According to a statement issued by the military’s media wing, the Army personnel removed rainwater from underpasses located at Golimar, Golimar and KPT, adding that these underpasses have been reopened for traffic. Monsoon rains add to Karachi’s woes, kill two youngsters

A powerful monsoon system formed in the Arabian Sea caused torrential downpours in various parts of Karachi Sunday evening, but it claimed the lives of two youngsters. According to the police, a woman and her three-month-old daughter fell into a flooded nullah in the Buffer Zone area while they were passing through on a motorbike. The woman was rescued in an unconscious state, while a search for her daughter was initiated.
