NAB kills people and drops their bodies at hospitals: Mandviwalla

Pakistan's anti-graft watchdog is engaged in human rights violations, Senate Deputy Chairperson Saleem Mandviwalla claimed on Wednesday, accusing the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for "killing people and dropping off their bodies at hospitals".

Mandviwalla said he spoke to civil liberty bodies about the anti-corruption watchdog's alleged malpractices but they feared highlighting the matter as it would "tarnish Pakistan's image" around the world.

"NAB accuses everyone of being thieves and robbers", he said, asking: "How dare it level such allegations against people?"

"Women call and narrate what the NAB has done to them and their families. This institution is killing people and, when they die, it leaves their bodies in the hospital.

"NAB is violating human rights. I spoke to human rights organisations about it but they are afraid that talking about it will ruin Pakistan's image. Not a day goes by when I do not receive a call about the NAB's [alleged atrocities] and its actions," he said.

The Senate official claimed he had received calls from abroad wherein people told him they left the country due to the anti-graft body's harassment.

"We have made the NAB into a monster," he added, challenging the watchdog's representatives to appear in front of a committee if they had done nothing wrong.

"NAB Chairperson [Justice (r) Javed Iqbal] should have the courage to listen to these families' woes," he added, underlining that he would provide a list of people who have been affected by the anti-corruption body.

North Korea imported more than 1 million facial masks and 15,000 pairs of rubber gloves from China in July, shortly before declaring victory over Covid-19, Chinese trade showed on Saturday. Pyongyang last week declared victory over the coronavirus, ending a little-detailed fight against “fever” cases that had risen to 4.77 million. It has registered no new such cases since July 29. Still, China exported 1.23 million facial masks to North Korea in July, worth $44,307, surging from 17,000 the previous month, according to data released by Chinese customs. Sindh govt seeks army's help in implementation of coronavirus SOPs

The government of Sindh has sought help from the Pakistan Army in implementing coronavirus SOPs as cases of the virus surge across the country. The provincial government has written to the Ministry of Interior, seeking the army's help for the civil administration under Article 245 of the Constitution. Pakistan Army on Monday continued its relief and rescue operation in Karachi, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR). According to a statement issued by the military’s media wing, the Army personnel removed rainwater from underpasses located at Golimar, Golimar and KPT, adding that these underpasses have been reopened for traffic. However, the dewatering process was continued in various areas inundated with rainwater, read the statement.
