Polling for the election of new mayor of Islamabad underway.

The polling process that began at 9am will continue until 5pm without any break, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has fielded Pir Adil Shah while the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Malik Sajid Mahmood. An independent candidate, Azhar Mahmood is also in the run for the slot of the Islamabad mayor.

In the 73-member electoral college, the main opposition party PML-N enjoys a clear majority with 47 votes against the 25 votes of the PTI.

The seat of the mayor fell vacant after Sheikh Anser Aziz resigned from the post in October last, months after he was restored by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) after being suspended over corruption allegations.

In 2016, Sheikh Anser Aziz was elected the first mayor of Islamabad.

Amid ongoing attacks by militants, Afghanistan on Tuesday launched its coronavirus vaccination drive with the hopes of inoculating thousands of Afghans against the disease that has wrecked havoc in the world. US President Joe Biden urged calm between Israel and Gaza on Saturday and affirmed his support for a two-state solution in his first phone call with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas since taking office, the official Palestinian news agency said. The government of Sindh has sought help from the Pakistan Army in implementing coronavirus SOPs as cases of the virus surge across the country. The provincial government has written to the Ministry of Interior, seeking the army's help for the civil administration under Article 245 of the Constitution. The spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban on Monday declared that the war in the country is over, saying that the group desires peaceful relations with the world.
