Pervaiz Rashid's plea against rejection of nomination papers
An Election Tribunal comprising a judge of the Lahore High Court (LHC) issued on Monday notices to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the Punjab House on a petition against the rejection of PML-N stalwart Pervaiz Rashid’s nomination papers for the upcoming Senate elections

The tribunal directed them to furnish their comments on the petition by tomorrow (Tuesday).

Pervaiz Rashid through his lawyer Azam Nazir Tarar stated that the ECP’s returning officer rejected his client’s nomination papers on the ground that he had not paid the Punjab House’s dues to tune of Rs9.5 million.

He said the PML-N leader is willing to pay the money to remove the objection raised by the election commission. Rashid remained a member of the upper house of Parliament, he said, arguing the Punjab House could have asked the Senate chairman to deduct the amount from his client’s salary.

The lawyer said the returning officer asked his client to deposit the amount but there is nobody to receive the same. He pleaded with the tribunal to overrule the commission’s objection and allow Rashid to contest the Senate polls.

Pyongyang last week declared victory over the coronavirus, ending a little-detailed fight against “fever” cases that had risen to 4.77 million. It has registered no new such cases since July 29. Still, China exported 1.23 million facial masks to North Korea in July, worth $44,307, surging from 17,000 the previous month, according to data released by Chinese customs. The spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban on Monday declared that the war in the country is over, saying that the group desires peaceful relations with the world. The statement comes a day after the Afghan Taliban entered Kabul as President Ashraf Ghani left the country, saying he wanted avoid bloodshed and conflict. Western sanctions against Russia could cause the International Space Station to crash, the head of Russian space agency Roscosmos warned on Saturday, calling for the punitive measures to be lifted. The government of Sindh has sought help from the Pakistan Army in implementing coronavirus SOPs as cases of the virus surge across the country. The provincial government has written to the Ministry of Interior, seeking the army's help for the civil administration under Article 245 of the Constitution. President Alvi signs EVM bill passed by Parliament

President Dr Arif Alvi Thursday signed the Election (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which had earlier been passed by the Parliament and asked opposing voices not to be afraid of “simple” electronic voting machines (EVMs) which he hoped would help in holding a fair election and bringing an end to rigging. “People will have to trust it. It involves no advancement. It is too simple. The country achieves progress by adopting new things,” the president said while addressing a ceremony. Passed by the Parliament, the bill provides for holding of the next general election through the EVM as well as granting the right of vote to the overseas Pakistanis through i-voting. Pakistan Army continued its relief and rescue operation in Karachi: ISPR

Pakistan Army on Monday continued its relief and rescue operation in Karachi, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR). According to a statement issued by the military’s media wing, the Army personnel removed rainwater from underpasses located at Golimar, Golimar and KPT, adding that these underpasses have been reopened for traffic. However, the dewatering process was continued in various areas inundated with rainwater, read the statement. The Army personnel were also shifting vehicles trapped in rainwater to safe locations and removing other obstacles from the major thoroughfares in order to ensure smooth flow of traffic in the city.
