In visit to GHQ, President Alvi acknowledges army's 'unparalleled contribution and sacrifices'

President Dr Arif Alvi acknowledged Pakistan Army's "unparalleled contribution and sacrifices" for the country's security during a visit to general headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Wednesday, according to a statement from the military's media wing.

"President [Alvi] acknowledged [the] unparalleled contribution and sacrifices rendered by [the] Pakistan Army towards [the] external and internal security of Pakistan," the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said.

"He also commended [the] army’s prowess in the field of information technology and coordination mechanisms with other services/stakeholders."

The president was received by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa upon his arrival at the GHQ and presented with a guard of honour, the statement added.

He also laid a floral wreath at the Martyrs Monument and offered prayers.

The ISPR statement said the president and COAS discussed matters of national security and regional developments. The president was also apprised of the army's operational preparedness and given a briefing on cyber security by the military's communication and information technology branch.

Last week, Gen Bajwa said hostile forces were "trying to weaken the society and state through a hybrid war", adding that Pakistan Army was "fully cognisant" of the challenges and was prepared to tackle them.

"We will ensure the country's defence by focusing on core competencies and technology," he had said while addressing cadets at the Pakistan Military Academy, reminding them that "only strong armed forces can guarantee the defence of the motherland."

Western sanctions against Russia could cause the International Space Station to crash, the head of Russian space agency Roscosmos warned on Saturday, calling for the punitive measures to be lifted. The government of Sindh has sought help from the Pakistan Army in implementing coronavirus SOPs as cases of the virus surge across the country. The provincial government has written to the Ministry of Interior, seeking the army's help for the civil administration under Article 245 of the Constitution. Sindh government said it would inform the interior ministry about details regarding troop employment and equipment after holding consultations over the matter. Pakistan Army on Monday continued its relief and rescue operation in Karachi, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR). According to a statement issued by the military’s media wing, the Army personnel removed rainwater from underpasses located at Golimar, Golimar and KPT, adding that these underpasses have been reopened for traffic. However, the dewatering process was continued in various areas inundated with rainwater, read the statement. Monsoon rains add to Karachi’s woes, kill two youngsters

A powerful monsoon system formed in the Arabian Sea caused torrential downpours in various parts of Karachi Sunday evening, but it claimed the lives of two youngsters. According to the police, a woman and her three-month-old daughter fell into a flooded nullah in the Buffer Zone area while they were passing through on a motorbike. The woman was rescued in an unconscious state, while a search for her daughter was initiated.
