Punjab challenges Supreme Court’s restoration of local councils
The Punjab government has challenged the Supreme Court’s restoration of the local councils in the province, reported on Thursday.The province has filed a preliminary review petition against the apex court’s March 25 verdict.

The provincial government will file a comprehensive appeal in the top court within few days.

A new local government law has been on the anvil in Punjab, which will empower the local representatives, according to the petition.

The restoration of the 2016 local councils will create problems, the government argued in its petition.

The Supreme Court had restored the local government system in Punjab on March 25, by terming the Local Bodies Act 2019 in contradiction with the Constitution of Pakistan.

The Punjab Local Government Act 2019 was passed by the provincial legislature in May, 2019.

A bench of the Supreme Court headed by CJP Justice Gulzar Ahmed, terming section three of the Local Bodies Act in contradiction of the constitution, ordered to restore the local government system in Punjab.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed questioned the rationale behind winding up the local councils in Punjab.

The applicant had pleaded to the court that the local government system was terminated before its due time in December 2021.

The court after hearing arguments from both sides, had ordered to restore local councils by terming section three of the Local Bodies Act in contravention with the constitution of Pakistan.

The Opposition has decided to jointly move a no-confidence motion against National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, sources said Wednesday, after two days of ruckus in the Lower House. The development came during a meeting of Opposition party leaders in Islamabad, where they decided to form a committee that would draft a plan of action to move the no-confidence motion. Former PM's close aide Shahzad Akbar's name placed on ECL

The federal cabinet amended the Exit Control List (ECL) on Tuesday on the recommendation of the Interior Ministry, removing 22 names from the no-fly list and adding 10 people to it, while giving a one-time permission to three people to leave the country. Those added to the ECL included Shahzad Akbar, who served as adviser on interior and accountability to former prime minister Imran Khan, and Ziaul Mustafa Naseem. Both names were included in the ECL based on cases pertaining to a private housing scheme. The cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, received a briefing from the Climate Change Ministry on the effects of climate change in the country. Pakistan rejects illegal grant of IOK domicile certificates to Indians

Pakistan has categorically rejected the grant of domicile certificates of Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOK) by the Indian authorities to reportedly 25,000 Indian nationals. In a statement, Foreign Office Spokesperson Aisha Farooqui said that the certificates issued to non-Kashmiris including, among others, the Indian government officials under “Jammu and Kashmir Grant of Domicile Certificate (Procedure), 2020” are illegal, void and in complete violation of the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, and International law including the 4th Geneva Convention.
